Designers at Russian security giant Kaspersky Lab decided to give their products a thorough facelift for 2012. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2012 ($39.95 direct, $59.95 for three licenses) looks very different from the 2011 edition. As far as capabilities and test results go, though, it's déjà vu all over again. Just like last year's model Kaspersky's antivirus got great marks from the independent labs, but it didn't do as well in my hands-on tests.
Kaspersky's new look drops the familiar tabs-at-left format, opting instead for big buttons across the bottom. The recently-released BitDefender Antivirus Plus 2012 ($39.95 direct for three licenses, 4 stars) also got a complete makeover, and its layout is rather similar to Kaspersky's. Both even use a smartphone-style dot-slider to bring additional icons into view. |
