I'm experiencing this problem as well, where I've applied the hotfix, and found myself without sound.

First of all thank you very much for the useful information provided here regarding the new windows update rthdcpl.exe conflict...
I had encountered this problem today after opting some updates from the windows update site after nearly 6 months with no updates/fixes... At first i did not give it any attention and decided to live with it since i keep my pc running and do not reboot or shutdown... did not hit me then untill i was going to watch a movie so i unpluged the desktop speakers and jacked in the earphones to find out that there is no sound as the realtek sound manager did not pop up to update the new audio i/o setting, In general that should not cause the no sound problem but it did this time and when i unpluged the earphones and jacked in the desktop speakers the no sound proplem remained so. Then i started to panic, did not bang my head to a wall but i was close, i admit. After a brief search i found you guys and here i am to give back. I hosted the hotfix file there http://www.yourfilehost.com/media.php?cat=...448_x86_ENU.zip Brief Description Install this update to resolve an issue where the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel may not start after you install security update KB925902 (MS07-017) and security update KB928843 (MS07-008). Update for Windows XP (KB935448) File Name: WindowsXP-KB935448-x86-ENU.exe Version: 1 Knowledge Base (KB) Articles: KB935448 Date Published: 4/3/2007 Language: English So to make it available for everyone with no hassle For the people with problem, Even without the fix your system should revert back to normal when you reboot. But to fix it for good and be able to access the realtek manager you have to opt for the hotfix I have used it and it did work, So thanks for the member who have posted the link and information. Appreciate it a lot. Have a nice day Phoenix |

Is there anything else I can do to get my sound back? |

I didn't lose sound on my laptop -- just headphone sound. Apart from the annoying error message upon loading, this failure prevented me from using Skype. But like I said, all is well now. - squirrel |

I tried the hotfix today and still no luck.
I lost all sound, my speakers don't work and when I plug in my headphones I still get nothing. As I said before the error message is gone, but I still don't have my sound back. |

UPDATE: I went in and removed the update entirely and I still don't have my sound back. I'm no computer whiz but this confuses me to no end.

Your experience is outside the norm of what's been reported here. Has anyone else uninstalled the update? I wouldn't even know how to do that. Maybe try contacting microsoft technical support -- won't that be fun? Sorry I can't be more help. -squirrel |

Hi, i got the error a couple of days ago, ran the hot fix and everything works OK, i even have sound on my laptop... Things are never that easy though, my desktop will no longer load, i literally just get the wallpaper but no icons, if i try to log on as a different user i get the same result but then if i immediatley go back to my own area all the icons are there and i can use the computer normally.
Any one else had this? how can i fix it? i really don't know much about computers so any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

It seems that the latest Windows XP SP2 security update causes problems to the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel (or to the Realtek HD Audio Sound Effect Manager).
This is Microsoft's fault. The error appearing is: -------- Rthdcpl.exe - Illegal System DLL Relocation The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\Hhctrl.ocx occupied an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL. -------- In order to fix this problem, you should: - Download the latest update from Realtek, from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downlo...p;GetDown=false - Download the Microsoft hotfix, from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935448 (just clock on the "Download the 935448 package now" and install) The steps above fix the infamous "rthdcpl.exe illegal system dll relocation" problem. |
